Offshore stash won’t help middle class economy

June 30th, 2011 No comments

In various threads one attractive idea keeps popping up: Provide tax cut incentives for the return of money that American corporations deposit in overseas banks (in Cayman, Dubai, etc.) so that they will use it here to build infrastructure, create jobs, and boost production.

It doesn’t work.

This was tried with the Homeland Investment Act of 2005. Billions of dollars were brought back, but according to MIT economics professor Kristin J. Forbes, for every dollar that was brought back, there were zero cents used for additional capital expenditures, research & development, or hiring and employee wages.

The money went into bonuses, shareholders, whatever. A lot of it belonged to the pharmaceutical business.

The fat cats who make money are determined to keep it in the hands of those who have money instead of putting it into the economy.

Most Americans say U.S. in recession or worse

April 29th, 2011 No comments

Where do you think the US is headed?

Do you believe the “official” numbers or the average American?

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/28/us-usa-economy-gallup-idUSTRE73R3WW20110428?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews

(Reuters) – More than half of Americans say the U.S. economy is in a recession or a depression despite official data that show a moderate recovery, according to a poll released on Thursday.

The April 20-23 Gallup survey of 1,013 U.S. adults found that only 27 percent said the economy is growing. Twenty-nine percent said the economy is in a depression and 26 percent said it is in a recession, with another 16 percent saying it is “slowing down,” Gallup said.

The Gallup poll found that Democrats are the most likely to say the economy is growing. Forty-three percent of Democrats said the economy is in a recession or depression, 13 percent said it is slowing down and 42 percent said it is growing.

Sixty-eight percent of Republicans and supporters of the conservative Tea Party movement said the economy is in a recession or a depression. Fourteen percent of Republicans and 13 percent of Tea Party supporters said the economy is growing.

Fifty-seven percent of independent voters — a crucial segment of the electorate for Obama’s re-election bid — said the economy is in a recession or depression and 24 percent said it is growing.

The Politcal Arena/ For us or against us either way?

March 14th, 2011 No comments

I keep on watching and hoping for some kind of compromise, or well thought out way to care for our nation. I have studied the issues and watched the Senate. I hear the comments “Somethings got to give”, “Entitlements must go”, “obvious and provable corruption” at least at the level of campaign contributions, in the voices of a few senators, I hear the heartfelt and murderous statements of many, I see that we are all probably taking part in a process in which one way OR the other we ALLwill probably be duped. Of course we must get out of debt. No one denies that. So who is going to stand up and say, you know this is partly my fault, so I am going to quit taking money under the table, and support the programs which give the best support to our people AND the budget. No where do I hear a humble voice, saying maybe the people have a few ideas we could use, as this Is their country, except for a very few Democrats, unless they are born of total hysterical and senseless anger. I am a bit discouraged at this point, because it isn’t dying that scares me. If I don’t do it to myself, I will go in peace. It is living that is difficult. We the living must edure, hopefully with joy and happiness. I am tired of the banners of the parties waving in my face. I want to have a life to live. That is why it has always been important to me to be a citizen of the country our forefathers left to us. I’ve worked since I was 9 years old babysitting to buy my own school lunches and clothes. When I was old enough for a real job I started paying taxes along with everyone else. while other kids were given the things they needed.  I have done everything from bagging groceries to in home care for the elderly and disabled. I am in a position now in which I need help. I feel sucker punched! I raised 4 children without a dime of government money and sacrificed plenty. I sent my kids to school with home made biscuits and cornstarch jam sandwiches for thier lunch, and hand me down clothes, and was dragged through interrogation of my motherhood by the school because my husband and I didn’t believe our kids should have lunch on taxpayer dollars. We all made it. I am still proceeding by the “skin of my teeth”.My deceased husband was a laboratory technician, trained in the Navy, and after two and a half hitches found out it was a supplemental wage job. Now THAT was a real crime huh? The accusation “if you can’t feed em, don’t breed em” , was with me long before it was stated here. But we did our level best with what we could do, and had unfortunate and rude surprizes, as do many.  Did I whine and complain? H— no! I went by the statement “Use it up, wear it out, Make it do or do without!” The meals I cooked were less than yummy a lot, and still are. Wouldn’t I love a menu in which I could actually buy ALL the ingredients I need. But I do not take what is not due to me. I am happy to have enough to get by. I don’t want to depend on anyone except myself, but at this stage, when I can no longer do physical labor, I need help. So crucify me. Just hurry up about it?Who wants to endure more nausea from stress than I ever had with four preganancies? Who wants to be kicked in the teeth for tireless service from my family, while my husband served our country? People these days feel persecuted if they don’t get to have an I POD. I wouldn’t know how to use one, because it is totally out of my budget, as is school, medical care, and a decent diet. Whoop and holler all you want, in whatever direction you want. WE are responsible for what happens to every soul who lives in the US. I paid in just as everyone else. Want to nail me to a cross because I’m old and disabled? That would be a typical ignorant of what IS happening in our government action. LOOK HARD AT EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Isn’t it possible that this hornets nest was stirred up, just to get our attention diverted long enough to make slaves out of all of us, outside of party, and inside of GREED? How much of our legislation is bought and paid for, instead of initiated by public awareness? This could be the LAST wake up call. I am not as angry as I am just plain tired, after 60 plus years. What about you?

Get rid of Ethanol in Gas and boost food production in the US and in Exports

February 8th, 2011 No comments

Ethanol in gasoline is one of the biggest boondoggles of our time.  It wastes farm resources for food and actually DECREASES fuel efficiency.  We had one gas station left with regular gas…no ethanol and a tank of that took us twice as far as the ethanol stuff.  It’s a failure on many levels and should be discontinued immediately.  The time is NOW for farmers to grow food for humans and animal resources and get out of the fuel business.  This will support our ailing economy and would be an immediate first step that this Congress/Administration could do ASAP!

Senate panel to put ethanol under the microscope

The Hill – The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee’s agenda this year includes new scrutiny of ethanol.

A spokesperson for committee Democrats said a hearing is in the offing but hasn’t been scheduled yet. Whenever it occurs, the session will highlight the ongoing Capitol Hill battle over the renewable fuel.

Ethanol is already under attack from interests ranging from environmentalists to food industry groups to oil refiners, as well as a left-right coalition of lawmakers seeking to strip tax subsidies. Opponents of expanded ethanol use include Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the Environment and Public Works Committee’s top Republican.

Is there anyone else who thinks Obama limits his smoking to tobacco?

We have two major crises in this country, Unemployment and Debt..

Why should we let him or the politicians put us in debt when he refuses to cut back in other areas?

Why not take away the Senate and Congressional raises to pay for those who are unemployed? And another 25-50% of their pay? It isn’t earned, Democrats or Republicans!. .

When is he going to grow up? Every time he doesn’t get his way, it’s the Republicans.fault or the white mans fault..

I would hope that there are enough blacks and Latinos that see through this inept president.

He’s like a momma’s boy. “They’re picking on me again, momma”.!

Republicans are to blame?

July 14th, 2010 No comments

On the latest strings I noted that the Republicans were to blame for  the loss of unemployment extensions.  This was followed by Pelosi declaring that these benefits were the root of new jobs.  It is not possible, at the moment for, the Republicans (alone) to block anything as they do not have near enough votes to do so.  Secondly this was not just a unemployment extension.  Pelosi and Reid added some $38B to it,  money for local and state government so they could avoid cutting their budget as well as much more.  Stripped down to just an extension the bill likely would have passed with a caveat..where was the money to come from?  The Republicans and some moderate Democrats did not wish to add it to the national debt…they wanted to take it from monies still in last years stimulus package.  Not only did the Democrats refuse to do so they also chose to add all these other “benefits” to the national debt.

And of course the Republicans are “in bed” with Wall Street.  But what was the party that proposed then got passed the stimulus package?  And where was that money going other than to the auto makers…Wall Street perhaps?  And how many of Obama’s advisors came from Wall Street…start with Geitner.

Obama to give $600 million to 5 states for housing

March 30th, 2010 No comments
$600 million?  That is a drop in the bucket Barack!  Why not stop the two insane wars in the Middle East and bring those $Billions back to the USA to help our people recover from this financial mess.  The Democrats & Republicans have plenty of our money to give to the big banks and Wall Street but only crumbs for the rest of us.
