If people go on Medicaid when they are old and go into a nursing facility, they can still own a home in their name.
When they die, their estates are attached – but only for the cost of the premiums they paid to be on Medicaid – which might have only been $50 a month or so.
Not the actual cost of care – which could have been thousands a month.
Then, their kids can inherit the bulk of the estate – and the home could have been worth 4 million and it wouldn’t matter.
Most of the homes are probably NOT worth 4 million. They belong to middle class or even poor people – so they get breaks just like the rich.
BIG breaks.
Another family may have had parents who purchased long-term care and been responsible. They may have paid thousands out over the years for their long-term care policies. (I know one family that has paid out over $50,000 in long-term care premiums.)
So, let’s look at what is fair.
And who is responsible – and who turns to the state because it is easy and no one holds anyone accountable.
