Catch 22? US Highest Corporate Tax Rate

March 29th, 2011 No comments

Watched the 60 minutes report on Sunday night.  Found it very interesting and am wondering if the US is going to have some sort of response.

Cisco Pushes or Lower Corporate Tax Rate

Follow this link to see the tax rates as of 2008

On one hand I feel cheated that these companies are able to pay a much smaller tax burden even though they are essentially American companies.  On the other hand, the whole reason to exist as a company is to make money.  So, as a CEO, if there is a way to move revenue oversees and not pay the higher tax rate you are satisfying the investors in the company.  Getting a better ROIC which is what the shareholders want to see.

I know as an individual I had to pay income tax in both the foreign country that I worked in, and in the US.  They do not offset each other and I ended up paying more taxes than if I had just been in the US.  What a racket eh?

So, what should be done?  Should the US lower its tax rate like several other countries have done?  For example, Germany lowered there corporate tax rate by 8.7% from 2007 – 2008.

How are we to compete if we don’t lower the tax rate?
